A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southern Panama on October 9, 2026, triggering evacuations, structural damage and tsunami alerts across parts of the Pacific region.According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck 12 kilometres southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, Panama, at a depth of 12.6 kilometres. The powerful tremor was followed by a second major earthquake and numerous aftershocks.The provinces of Herrera, Veraguas and Los Santos were among the areas affected. Reports described damaged buildings, cracked roads and damage to historic structures. Electricity disruptions were reported across six provinces as authorities assessed the impact.The earthquake also prompted tsunami warnings for parts of the Pacific coastline. The warnings were subsequently lifted. Panama City residents evacuated buildings as the shaking was felt across the country.Despite the powerful earthquake, the Panama Canal remained operational, according to initial reports.
